A practical example is the owner of a 30-year-old semi-detached house who wants a larger living-dining volume, better bedroom sizes, and a more generous stair. On paper, this sounds like an A&A exercise. In reality, once the architect examines the existing column grid, floor levels, roof form, and setback position, the retained structure may force awkward compromises. The new family room may end up offset by old structural walls. The stair may remain inefficient because the slab openings are expensive to rework.
